Wooster Sauce Caramelized Onion Party Dip

Featuring

This creamy, savory dip layers deep caramelized onions with the tangy umami of Wooster Sauce. The sauce is used to season the onions as they cook and again in the dip base for rich flavor that pairs perfectly with crunchy chips and veggies.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Wooster Sauce

Creamy Dip Base

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons Wooster Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

To Serve

  • Fresh chives or green onions, thinly sliced
  • Potato chips, pita chips, crackers
  • Cut vegetables, such as carrots, celery, and bell pepper strips

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions

    1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    2. Add the sliced onions and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt. Stir to coat in the butter and oil.
    3. Cook, stirring every few minutes, for 20 to 25 minutes. Adjust the heat to medium low as needed so the onions soften and slowly turn golden without burning.
    4. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and continue to cook for another 5 to 10 minutes, until the onions are deeply golden and jammy.
    5. Stir in 2 tablespoons Wooster Sauce and cook for 1 minute more so it coats the onions and reduces slightly.
    6. Remove from the heat and let the onions cool to room temperature.
  2. Prepare the creamy base

    1. In a medium bowl combine sour cream, mayonnaise, and softened cream cheese.
    2. Beat or whisk until smooth and well combined.
    3. Add 2 tablespoons Wooster Sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper.
    4. Stir until the mixture is smooth and evenly seasoned.
  3. Combine onions and dip base

    1. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of the caramelized onions for garnish.
    2. Chop the remaining cooled caramelized onions into smaller pieces for easier scooping.
    3. Fold the chopped onions into the creamy dip base until evenly distributed.
  4. Chill

    1. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This resting time lets the flavors blend and the dip thicken.
  5. Garnish and serve

    1. Transfer the chilled dip to a serving bowl.
    2. Top with the reserved caramelized onions.
    3. Sprinkle with sliced chives or green onions.
    4. Serve with potato chips, pita chips, crackers, and a platter of cut vegetables.
    5. Place the jar of Wooster Sauce nearby so guests can add a few extra drops on top if they enjoy a stronger savory kick.

Tips

  • For an extra smooth dip, blend half of the caramelized onions with the creamy base before folding in the remaining chopped onions.
  • This dip can be made up to 2 days ahead. Keep covered in the refrigerator and give it a good stir before serving.
  • Leftovers make a great spread for burgers or sandwiches for another boost of Wooster Sauce flavor.
